Sam Whiteman and Joel Paris have been named in a star-studded Marsh Sheffield Shield squad for Western Australia.
Western Australia today named a 13-man squad for their season-opening clash with Tasmania, which gets under way at the WACA Ground tomorrow.
Paris is one of a raft of WA players with international experience in line to play. The classy left-armer picked up two wickets and scored 62 runs for Claremont-Nedlands in first-grade cricket at the weekend.
Whiteman is in the frame to open the batting and is coming off 90 not out in Fremantle’s win over Rockingham-Mandurah.
The 27-year-old made a strong return to Shield cricket as a specialist batsman at the end of last season with a series of impressive scores, while Paris was a reliable wicket-taker with three separate three-wicket hauls late in the season.
“It’s nice to be able to play our first two Shield games at the WACA Ground, we love playing our cricket here,” WA coach Adam Voges said.
“The team is in a great place at the moment, I’m really happy with the balance of our side and the mix of youth and experience we have at our disposal is a great sign for WA cricket. We’ve been building towards this first Shield game for the whole preseason, everyone has trained hard and we’re excited it’s finally here.”
