John Peers has been called up to Australia’s Davis Cup squad for their qualifying tie against Brazil in Adelaide next week.
Peers joins Alex Bolt as replacements for No.1 singles pair Alex de Minaur and Nick Kyrgios, who both had lingering injuries flare in Acapulco this week.
“When we announced the team earlier in the week we were hopeful they both would be healthy to play,” Davis Cup Captain Lleyton Hewitt said. “As seen in Acapulco during the week Alex’s abdominal injury has flared up and Nick has a wrist complaint, and they need to rest and focus on their recovery.
“It’s great we can call on John Peers, a long standing member of the Australian team, and give Alex Bolt the opportunity to join the squad for the first time alongside John Millman, Jordan Thompson and James Duckworth.”
The official draw for the Davis Cup qualifier will be held on Thursday.
Doubles specialist Peers was part of the Australian team that competed in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in November and then reached the semifinals in the inaugural ATP Cup.
Peers and Michael Venus are set for the Dubai Tennis Championships semifinals on Friday.
The pair will take on Jurgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin on centre court for a place in the final.
