WA’s Australian Open mixed-doubles champion Matthew Ebden knows the next month of his season is pivotal.
Davis Cup commitments, coupled with sickness in Miami, stunted Ebden’s ability to accrue crucial rankings points over the past month and a half and he slipped to world No.137 after a high of 61 last October.
Ebden, back in Perth for a two-week break before heading to Asia and Europe, said he knew he had an opportunity to force his way back inside the world’s elite group and avoid Wimbledon and US Open qualifiers, while proving himself worthy of Tennis Australia’s discretionary wildcard for Roland Garros.
“There’s obviously a wildcard, which they might release this week or next week, and that’s what I need; I’ve missed the cut-off for the French,” Ebden said.
“Looking back, I think I’ve taken a flight or played a tournament every week since winning the Australian Open, the mixed doubles there.
“That wore me out a bit. I’m going to play a few challengers, a few smaller tournaments, before the French to try and bump my ranking back up in Asia and try to make the Wimbledon cut.
