Michael Freiberg has defied the odds to claim a memorable first Australian road title in Ballarat on Sunday.
Freiberg was dropped on the final climb but fought back in the dying seconds to attack 1km from the finish.
Freiberg triumphed ahead of Chris Harper and fellow West Australian Cameron Meyer.
“I thought it was completely over, I had really nothing left … but it turned out nobody else had anything left,” Freiberg told the West Australian. “I was coming down the home straight and was like ‘wow, there’s actually no one in front of me’. It was one of those rare moments where it all came together piece by piece.”
