Three Team Emageo stars have been named in the Western Australian Women’s Team squad for the opening round of the Women’s National Cricket League in Brisbane this weekend.
Captain Chloe Piparo, opening batter Nicole Bolton and spinner Emma King all flew to Queensland yesterday morning as part of the 14-player squad as the WA Women embark on a new 50-over season.
There are also five new faces in the squad, with youngsters Molly Healy, Sheldyn Cooper and Meg Thompson included alongside batter Ashley Day and wicketkeeper Emma Inglis.
Coach Lisa Keightley said she was looking forward to getting under way as they take on Queensland on Saturday and Tasmania on Sunday, both at South District Cricket Club.
“The team has worked really hard over the winter months and we can’t wait to get stuck into this first challenge,” Keightley said.
“We’ll be working hard to get a couple of wins early in this new extended WNCL format, which will help set us up for the back end of the season.”
Piparo said she was pleased with the balance of youth and experience in the squad.
“Getting away as a group is always a great experience and to have that time with the new players in the squad will be fantastic,” she said. “Playing Queensland and Tasmania will be a great test first up, we’ll be looking to turn the tables from our last round of WNCL last year where both sides got the better of us.
“I think we match up on paper really well and I’m confident that we’ve put in the preparation to be able to perform against both sides this weekend.”
