Olivia Rogowska has moved in to the second round of the Australian Open with victory over Columbian Mariana Duque Marino 6-3 6-3.
Rogowska has reached the second round of her home Slam just once before, in 2012, when she beat Sofia Arvidsson in straight sets.
“I am pretty stoked. The plan was just to stay immensely calm and I am really happy with how my nerves held out to the end and closed it out so I was really happy,” she said.
Rogowska believes a dedicated approach to the mental aspects of her game have helped her.
“I woke up feeling good this morning and in the match I got a bit ahead of myself at one stage at 5-3 in the second but I have been working on some mental things in the off-season and I just closed it out so I am happy.”
Awaiting the Australian in the second round is world No. 47 Elina Svitolina who defeated nineteenth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The match is scheduled for Thursday.
