One of Australia’s tennis greats has thrown down the challenge to WA’s Matt Ebden to “become somebody” on the world stage.
Peter McNamara, one half of the Super Macs pairing he formed with Paul McNamee that rose into the world top 10 and claimed 14 doubles titles, including three grand slams, this week signed on as Ebden’s coach in what will undoubtedly prove a boost to the 25-year-old’s game.
McNamara was a high-achieving singles player in his own right, reaching world No.7 in 1983, and replaces Ebden’s former coach, Darren Tandy.
The two-time Wimbledon winner, who coached former world No.8 Mark Philippoussis and Bulgarian tyro Grigor Dimitrov, said Ebden had the ability to be as high as top 30 by the end of next year.
