Malta’s first gold medal in the 2013 Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) has been won by Kevin Moore.
Moore took victory in the 400m final in 47.53 at the Josy Barthel Stadium in Luxembourg to lift Malta off the foot of the medal tally. Icelandic sprinters Ivar Jasonarson (48.05) and Kolbeinn Gunnarson (48.21) rounded out the podium.
“It feels awesome to have won the country’s first gold medal in these Games,” Moore said.
“I am really happy for myself to have delivered such an important result.
Moore’s preparation for the GSSE event was disrupted by a hamstring injury which threatened to derail his ambitions of competing for Malta at the Games.
“Seven weeks ago I picked up a hamstring injury in a 100 metres race and I feared the worst but luckily I recovered earlier,” Moore concluded.
