Rhys Mainstone

Rhys Mainstone’s career in open water swimming began as a chase for pocket money in high school when he saw fliers advertising cash prizes for a 1600m race. Those humble beginnings led the Perth-born marathon man to a breakout period following the 2009 season.

In the 12 months that followed his international junior debut, Mainstone captured the 2010 Australian 10km title and finished fourth in the Dubai leg of the senior world cup. A year later, the City of Perth charge won silver at the FINA world championships in Shanghai alongside Melissa Gorman and Ky Hurst in the 5km team event.

Mainstone shrugged off the disappointment of missing London Olympics selection to take the 2012 Australian title. Mainstone continued to be a strong performer but missed out on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics – a year in which he was named WA Open Water Swimmer of the year.

Mainstone decided to take a break from the sport but returned in 2018 and promptly won the WA Open Water Swimmer of the Year title again in 2019. He has his eyes firmly set on the Tokyo Olympics next year.
