Triathlete Ryan Bailie produced a stunning final run to anchor the Australian team to a silver medal Mixed Teams Relay World Championship in Hamburg.
The team consisting of Gillian Backhouse, Aaron Royle, Emma Jackson, and Bailie combined to produce Australia’s best result in the event.
“The Germans’ just go mental for a triathlon and was great to put on a show in front of them. The team did great,” Bailie said.
“It’s great to wear the green and gold at a World Championship.”
The fast and furious format requires each team member required to complete a 300m swim, 6.6km bike, and 1.6km run.
Bailie was the last to go for the Aussies and after his team mates put him in a position for a medal, Bailie didn’t let them down.
He fought back from a disappointing transition, to sit with Germany, France and Great Britain with his 1.2km run to go.
Bailie and French machine Vincent Luis broke away to make it a race in two.
The West Australian couldn’t quite keep up with the previous day’s men’s race winner Luis over the final stages.
In that race Bailey finished 15th, slightly down on his own expectations.
However, the performance still leaves him seventh in the World Triathlon standings, the only Australian in the top ten.
Congrats AUS for mixed team relay 2nd place. You can see why @worldtriathlon are pushing it to be an Olympic event! pic.twitter.com/EGPYqUi0sT
