Wimbledon, the most prestigious tennis tournament on the calendar, begins on the sacred courts at the All England Lawn Tennis Club later today with Sam Maxwell Sports Management clients Casey Dellacqua and Matt Ebden having their first round matches scheduled for Monday and Tuesday respectively.
Dellacqua will face Estonian qualifier Anett Kontaveit in the last match on Court 9. This will be the pairs first meeting, with Kontaveit needing 3 sets to defeat Dellacqua’s regular doubles partner, Ash Barty last week to book her place in the main draw.
Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska looms as a potential second round opponent for Dellacqua, should Radwanska get past Andreea Mitu.
Meanwhile on the men’s side, Ebden has a tougher task facing the eighth seeded Milos Raonic. The pair’s only previous meeting came in 2012 on the grass courts of Newport, with Raonic victorious in a tight 3 set match.
Should Ebden overcome the big serving Canadian on Tuesday, the Australian will face the winner of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Jack Sock in round two.
Both Ebden and Dellacqua are also in doubles action throughout Wimbledon.
Ebden, pairing with fellow Australian Sam Groth, has drawn #1 seeds Bob and Mike Bryan in round one. This is a rematch of a quarter final encounter from Houston earlier this year, a match which the Australians held match points before going down 12-10 in a super tiebreak.
Dellacqua will again pair with Barty, seeded 6th for 2014 following their run to last year’s final, and will play Eugenie Bouchard and Heather Watson for a place in the second round.
In the mixed doubles, Dellacqua will partner Jamie Murray.
Scores and updates from our athletes throughout Wimbledon will be posted on our website and via the Sam Maxwell Sports Management Twitter Account.
