Olympic marathon runner Lisa Weightman has taken out the 2013 Preston Leader and Northcote Leader Senior Sport Star of the Year Award.
Weightman, a former Preston and now Northcote resident, ran a personal best time to win last year’s Melbourne Marathon.
“It’s wonderful to receive the award,” Weightman said.
“As a woman in athletics we rarely get great media coverage with the exception of the Leader, which is always interested in my progress.
“I hope youngsters in my area read my story and it inspires them to be the best they can at whatever they choose in sport and life.”
A stress fracture in her sacrum which flared up over Christmas has halted her training but Lisa’s focus is still firmly on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this year.
“My training was on track to head to New York City for the half marathon, however, my fracture put a stop to that so now I am using the time to get my base (fitness) back ready for Commonwealth Games marathon training,” she said.
