Rhys Mainstone has finished third in Perth’s Swim The Swan race.
Mainstone swam across the finishing line in 1:54:23.66, just behind fellow Australian and winner Jarrod Poort (1:54:16.18) and runner-up Simon Huitenga (1:54:21.10).
South Africa’s Troyden Prinsloo who finished 12th in the London Olympics men’s 10km race, was fourth.
“I knew it was going to be difficult coming up against Rhys, Simon and all of the international boys so my goal was to stick with the pack and take it easy for the first 7.5km and then just give it everything in that last lap and hope my speed work from the pool would pay off,” said winner Poort.
For Mainstone, the result improves his chances of selection for the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast in August.
The Pan Pacific Championships, comprising top level teams from USA, Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and the rest of the Pacific, is on the Gold Coast on 21-25 August.
