Michael Freiberg has been named as a finalist in the Australian Track Cyclist of the Year.
After never having competed in an Omnium, an event spanning six track cycling disciplines over two days, before the start of 2011, Freiberg earned the right to represent Australia at the UCI Track World Championships with two 5th place finishes at the Beijing and Manchester World Cups early in the year.
Freiberg claimed his first World Championship victory in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn with a scorching first place in the scratch race on Day 2 setting up his win.
Currently in Astana, Kazakhstan for the first leg of the World Cup series, Freiberg’s eyes are firmly set on the London Olympics in 2012, where the Omnium will make its debut appearance in a reduced Olympic track cycling program.
Jack Bobridge and Shane Perkins are the other cyclists in line for the Award, with the announcement to be made at a gala event in Sydney on Friday 11 November.
