A spirited second set showing was not enough for Casey Dellacqua at Wimbledon overnight, with the Australian going down to former finalist Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets.
Dellacqua was impressive in her two opening rounds at the All England Club and was aiming to reach the last 16 for the first time to match her career-best grand slam runs in Melbourne and New York.
Radwanska stared strongly and took the first set 6-1 after making just two unforced errors.
Dellacqua hit back at the start of the second, clubbing winners at will to take a 4-0 lead.
However the Polish 13th seed continued to make the Australian play one extra ball, forcing errors from the Dellacqua racquet, taking the set 6-4 to close out the match in 63 minutes.
It wasn’t all bad for Dellacqua who returned to Court 3 later in the day for second round women’s doubles with Yaroslava Shvedova.
The ninth seeds and recent French Open finalists outclassed Daniela Hantuchova and Sam Stosur 6-3 6-0 to set up a third round meeting with Italian pair Karin Knapp and Roberta Vinci.
Sunday is the traditional rest day at Wimbledon with no play scheduled.
Dellacqua and Shvedova will play on Monday in the first match on Court 16 before Dellacqua returns to court later in the day to pair with Lleyton Hewitt against Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Cara Black in the second round of the mixed doubles.
