Joining Boyd in Brisbane tonight will be fellow Commonwealth Games representatives and 2010 National Champions Ben Offereins and Jody Henry.
Offereins, ranked 14th in the world over 400m in 2010, will run his pet event for the first time this year after running a number of 800m races in low-key West Australian competitions to help build his strength and fitness with a long season ahead.
He was due to race at the Hunter Track Classic two weeks ago when a stomach ailment unfortunately forced him to withdraw after his warm up.
Looking ahead to the rest of his 2011 season, Offereins will not spend as much time on the competition track as he did last year.
“This year we are taking a different approach and I’m not competing anywhere near as much,” he said.
“Obviously last season I was competing almost every week from October through to April, doing all the local club stuff. We sort of had to because we weren’t really sure what I could do. Now that we know where we are at, we can pick and choose our races a bit more, which is nice.
“The main focus is the Olympics in 2012, so we are doing what is good for the Olympics next year and not competing too much through the domestic season this year.
“The plan for this season is just to get to nationals and make the World Championships team.”
Henry will also be looking for a spot on the World Championships team for Daegu, but will be forced to wait a few more weeks until she runs over 400m.
With no 400m scheduled for this evening in Brisbane, Henry will contest the 200m against Olympic silver medallist Sally Pearson.
Henry is no stranger to the shorter distance however, with the West Australian the defending 200m National Champion.
Throughout the remainder of the domestic season Henry will compete over both distances, but focus on the 400m for the world championships.
“We are using the 200m as an event which can build my speed over 400m,” Henry said.
Both Henry and Offereins flew in to Brisbane yesterday afternoon and will race at 9.27pm (AEST) and 10.03pm (AEST) tonight respectively.
